Valentine’s Day was especially sweet for many Tennesseans this year as it was the same day as Disability Day on the Hill. DDH 2018 connected self-advocates and advocates across the state with their elected officials at the newly renovated Cordell Hull building. Despite the dreary weather outside, inside collaborative spirits were high and many individuals with disabilities, including 6 members of our Empowered Ladies* peer support group participated in the day’s events, met with representatives, and provided encouragement to each other. Love was definitely in the air last Wednesday. These women demonstrated respect for themselves, passion on issues of their choosing, care for their communities, and a desire for an inclusive, accessible, and diverse society.
Although February 14 was successful, members of Empowered Ladies are just getting started. We are keeping the momentum going as we get geared up for Women’s Day on the Hill on March 14. DDH was an excellent organized time for education and engagement, but if you missed it, you may wish to consider participating in upcoming day on the hill events such as TCCY’s Children’s Advocacy Days (March 13-14) and the aforementioned Women’s DOH. It is your right as a citizen and your responsibility as a constituent to let your voice be heard. Remember, you may contact your legislators on any day to express your praise or concerns; and, don’t forget to vote. It is never too late to advocate!
