Birtha M. Street
Birtha Street has been Empower Tennessee’s IL and Employment Specialist since July 2016. She holds a Bachelor Science degree in Social Work (BSSW) from Tennessee State University. Birtha, and her career of service toward others, began over ten years ago volunteering at the Memphis Center for Independent Living. She worked with individuals with varying disabilities so they may have productive, independent lives in the community. With a focus on improved transportation, suitable employment and housing, Birtha helped those to transition from nursing home or group home dependency to autonomy, as well as focused on helping people to find jobs that were accommodating to their physical needs. Birtha understands very well the importance of a stable income and decent housing, as she later volunteered her time to the Memphis Advisory Council for Citizens with Disabilities, working on their housing committee. Birtha later interned with Operation Stand Down Tennessee. She helped veterans looking for employment and worked with veterans and their families with their move out of homelessness to a stable, permanent residence. Birtha has a long history of dedication to others; and working for Empower TN will allow her to continue her drive of helping those with disabilities to achieve their personal goals. As an Employment Specialist, Birtha will continue her effort to work with individuals who want to return to the workforce. She will assist with things like matching candidates with job postings, resumes, and helping to develop good interview skills. Meanwhile, Birtha has, also, been an active advocate in the disabled community, and she will continue her efforts in this field.
